ART AT HOME | NATURE WALK!

Sometimes it can be difficult to share our experiences and feelings about the world around us with pictures or words. Unlike realistic styles, abstract artwork doesn’t usually show lifelike subjects but instead uses lines, shapes, and colors to share the artist’s emotions. Creating your own abstract artwork is a great way to visually express your own thoughts and feelings.

MATERIALS:

  • camera or phone
  • watercolors
  •  paint brush
  • cup with water
  • watercolor paper
  •  tape

SEE:

Get outside for a walk and explore the natural world around you. Take a few photographs of things that look beautiful to you - a colorful flower, the sun shining through the leaves, or even a slug.

THINK:

Think about what inspired you most on your walk. What colors stood out to you the most? What new things did you notice? Did anything surprise you? Once you get back home look through the pictures you just took and thoughtfully pick 5 colors that represent your outdoor walk.

DO:

Using your watercolor paints, create an abstract painting. You will probably need to mix some of the colors to match the 5 colors you picked out from your photographs. *Tip: Be sure to use plenty of water so your colors blend and mix together. Oh, and tape your paper down or the water will cause it to curl.

INSPIRE:

Now that you have experimented with watercolors and looked more closely at the world around you, be inspired to continue noticing and creating. Keep exploring with watercolors and finding inspiration in nature.

    MATERIALS:

    • camera or phone
    • computer (if you want)
    • noteboo k or piece of pape

    THINK:

What words would you use to describe your mom? How would you represent those words with a picture? What do you like to do together? How would you visually tell someone about her? As you’re brainstorming you can write these things down.

    SEE:

Look around your house, outside, and anywhere else you go while working on this project—notice your surroundings, the lighting, and the colors. Do you see anything that would help you to visually represent your mom and what you love most about her?

    art-projects-for-creative-kids.jpg

    DO:

Once you’ve found the perfect subject for your mom-inspired photo, examine it from different angles and from different distances—you might even want to get on the ground. Think about how to best capture your idea—should you zoom in close to something specific? Or do you want to capture a lot of different things in one shot? Get a few good images that make your eyes happy.

    INSPIRE:

If you have siblings or another loved one who is inspired by your mom, invite them to join in the fun by taking their own photos that represent what they love about her on this special day! When you’ve gathered all of your photos, share your artwork with your Mom! (Don’t forget to tell her why the subjects of your photos remind you of her!)

ART AT HOME: HAPPY EARTH DAY!

Celebrate the Earth, get inspired and make some art! Download our instruction sheet for this project (here!)

The first Earth Day took place on March 21, 1970 after John McConnell, a man who worked hard for the world to have peace, proposed that there should be a day to honor the Earth. Every year people from all over the world gather on Earth Day to celebrate nature and find ways to preserve our world—some communities even celebrate Earth Week!

    • cup of water to clean brushes
    • newspaper or paper bags to cover surface before you paint
    • camera (or phone!)

    art-at-home-new-1.jpg

    THINK:

What do you love most about nature? What is your favorite outdoor memory? Are there any colors that remind you of these thoughts and feelings?

    art-at-home-2-2.jpg

    DO:

Gather some natural objects from the ground such as rocks or pebbles and fallen branches, leaves, or pine cones. Paint these objects in colors that represent how you feel when you spend time in nature.

    INSPIRE:

Take your painted objects back outside and snap a few photos of your painted objects that capture how you feel about the Earth. Share with friends and family, encouraging them to enjoy the outdoors, too!
